SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A plan to help Spokane Valley renters financially is in the works right now.
A local housing organization wants to build new affordable housing in Spokane Valley. The goal is to provide more space that people can live in.
A seven-acre property on Appleway Boulevard near WinCo could be home to a new development.
On Wilbur Road in Spokane Valley, this affordable housing unit has been home for Karen Burress for seven years.
Burress and two other people split $830 a month for a two bedroom apartment.
"My share of the rent is $280," Burress said. "It's very affordable for me. I never want to move. They treat [me] really well here."
The Spokane Housing Authority wants to help more people find their homes. The seven-acre property will accommodate their needs in the community.
Pam Parr, executive director with the Spokane Housing Authority says the new site could provide at least 300 units.
"We probably need 10,000 units," Parr said. "People who are working at jobs that are anywhere from $15 to $25 an hour, you can't afford the average rent."
It will be available for people with incomes at or below 60% of the area's median income. For people who can't afford soaring rent, it's good news.Â
"You can't get a one bedroom [place for] less than $1000 a month," Burress said. "If you have kids, it's just unattainable to find the decent housing."
Parr says the organization is looking for private developers. The construction could begin in Fall 2025, and it's expected to be done by 2026.
"I think it's awesome," Burress said. "Housing is a big problem in Spokane."
