MOSCOW, Idaho - The man accused of killing four University of Idaho students likely won't go to trial for at least another year.
Judge John Judge heard the prosecution's suggestion Wednesday that Bryan Kohberger stand trial in March 2025.
That would be two years and three months since Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle were killed in an off campus home.
Prosecutors previously asked for the trial to happen this summer when school was not in session.
Moscow High School is directly across the street from the courthouse and the court was concerned about traffic, parking and disruptions.
The defense said the volume of evidence in the case makes it impossible to be ready for trial this summer and proposed summer 2025 instead.
Prosecutor Bill Thompson proposed March 3, 2025.
The defense said that would work only if things go "perfectly" between now and then.
"This is a capital case," said defense attorney Anne Taylor. "I need discovery, I need all the discovery... This case is challenged with the way discovery has come at us."
"We have DNA, we have cell phone analysis, we have video analysis," Taylor said. She said the prosecution is working on the case, but "this takes time."
Taylor also said speaking to witnesses is difficult because of the public nature of the case.
Taylor said June 2025 would be a better trial date given the scope of the case.
She said she would rather not set the trial date until the court decides on a change of venue.
She doesn't believe a fair trial can happen in Latah County.
"The massive publicity, that's a red herring," Thompson said, regarding the debate over a change of venue. Thompson said he sees more publicity for the case in Boise than he does in Moscow.
The defense plans to file supporting documents for its change of venue in April. The state has until early May to respond.Â
Judge Judge will hear the change of venue motion in May.
He'll rule on the trial date after that.
Also Wednesday, attorneys argued about accessibility to some of the genealogy evidence used to identify Kohberger as a suspect in the case.Â
